Uber, VanMile, ... it's Here, the Next Big Thing. Now, Go Build It

What?

A platform - for experts on call.

You're a handyman. You're not always occupied. So you offer your services remotely. When you're free, you sign into the app - that's right, just like Uber. You see a call - someone wants help unclogging their toilet - they'll pay you $5 for five minutes of help.

You see a call - someone's at Home Depot and isn't sure what they should buy to solve their home improvement problem. They'll offer $2 for two minutes of help.

You're a homeowner who doesn't want to pay the plumber's trip charge. You're sure you can solve this nuisance yourself for 20 bucks. So you put out a call on the app.

What do you need?

I recommend both sides have a VR headset that also has a camera - that way, you can easily see and show.

I think this is worth doing.

Hmmm... considering 6ya already exists, looks like this needs to be Facebooked - considering how Myspace already existed... what did Facebook do differently?

Oh For a Grown Up Version of Micro$oft Outlook!

How about letting users save *their* preferences for receiving mail from *you* so that, when you're sending a link to a file, Outlook can tell you : "x and 2 others in your send-to list would prefer the actual document rather than the link. Would you like to send them the attachment?"

Why not?

Of course, with Google Drive, things are easy - the link is always available. M$ trolls say they want to be able to look at the file on their phone on the plane and Sharepoint doesn't let them do that. Makes sense.

You know what we need? We need the second coming of Linux Torvalds. We need someone to create a framework for a new society where we use an open source version of Google (and doesn't feed you ads), an os version of Facebook, which doesn't feed you ads and fake news, an os version of AMZN, an os version of LinkedIn. M$ is not the evil empire anymore - at least, not the only evil empire..

AirBnB Missing Features

Far as I know, this is *STILL* not possible. What's the point of paying Haseeb Qureshi $250k a year if you can't what this out in a couple of days Jeff Dean style?

Give your guests a *menu* - if they want, they should be able to choose and pay extra for the bath robe, the massage chair, access to the garden, etc, etc, etc...

When?

Google Inbox Missing Feature (Applies to Gmail as well)

You get an email such as : Airbnb reservation request.

What you next need to pop-up - is your checklist.

Can you see to it please Pichai? Give me the email, but give me also a clear and present button to launch my designated checklist to deal with 'from:airbnb subject:"reservation request"'

A Powerful New Microsoft Excel Feature

I'd love this one. How many years before we get this one?

There's a spreadsheet I maintain at work. Some of it is private, some of it not. What I'd like is to be able to access the private stuff from home. That's the origin of the problem, but not overly important when it comes to saying what I want.

I want to open ONE excel file.

But, I want this act of opening this file to effectively open MULTIPLE files. Yes, the file I GO TO is the master dashboard - it loads up the other files and what I look at looks like one Excel workbook, that is saved in distributed fashion.

I'm sure there are hoops one can jump through to achieve the end result, but I want it packaged nicely.

New MacBook Features Scam Detect Auto Lock and Data Shred

You've heard of it on the news - person working on his laptop in a coffee shop, gets distracted, goons grab it - while it's unlocked - and, they even have access to his data and accounts - probably more valuable than the piece itself.

Fear no more. The sensor interface group working day and night at Cupertino under the watchful tutelage of Marty G has cooked up the perfect solution :

While you work, so do the cameras - both of them, and the brains.

First, it figures out your in a public place. Plug in Man, plug in, so I have juice to keep you safe, it screams.

You do, and now, using the engine developed by NSO and Mossad and the guys acquired from Primesense, it keeps watch - there are tell-tale signs that the bums coming in aren't looking for a caffeine-hit. No sir!

If your Mac now sees that your eyes have left the screen - guess what? - auto-lock. And, if you then don't log back in within 30 minutes - data shred! That's a factory-reset mate! Your data is safe! You are safe! What would Ross Ulbricht not give for this?

iReminders - Come on AAPL - Before Android Does It

You want to set smart alerts - especially in lousy places like India where carriers are going to nickel and dime you every chance they get.

So, I want to be warned if I have left my data ON more than 5 minutes.

But, be smart. If I turned data ON and then called an Uber, then I want to be warned about data being ON only AFTER I start my Uber ride..

Get it?

Google Maps is Nice, But...

How about dreams.maps.google.com - you input in great detail where you are - education, position ( job, location, financial situation, family situation, etc, etc, etc) - and the tool tells you how to get to your dream.

The saddest thing is to not be chasing your dream - to just be getting out of your bed in the morning and returning at night doing things that need to be done because there are mouths to be fed.

Methinks.

IBM Watson++

You know about Jeopardy - Watson wasn't given information - it taught itself by reading Wikipedia.

So, why not go further? Get Watson to take every Coursera, Udacity, EDx and Udemy course and see what you come up with? Maybe the cure for c is only a month away.

Robot-based Slapstick

This one came to me after watching a video James Conrad of UNCC showed to his class - a hex-pod with flippers instead of rigid actuator limbs - it could move on land and water and upside-down as well - the students loved it.

Considering the injury question (aside from cost) is out, you might see some neat slapstick in the years to come.

Shame on IIT Chennai

I don't get it - why not convert a problem into an opportunity?

If mosquitoes are such a massive issue, why not offer a B. Tech in Dragonfly Cultivation.

TV Remote Incorporating Drone Mobility (Quadrotor)

What more could a couch-potato ask for - your wife put the remote on the other end table and you want to get it without moving. How about a voice-command that it can respond to and fly to you?

Come on Makers. I think this one's easy.

Here's how to go about it :

  1. Create an Alexa skill (ok, maybe Raspberry Pi is good enough) so Alexa can tell the remote (over WiFi or Bluetooth, etc - maybe WiFi using the Particle Photon is the way to go)
  2. Then, hack the remote - needs rechargeable battery, and the drone board with the quadrotor.
  3. This requires a few mechanical hacks - you needs the buttons of the remote control on one side, with some extensible standoffs that telescope out so the buttons aren't on the table - unless you think that's okay.
  4. You also need to be able to flip the thing over using these actuators in case the thing has been put on the surface with the rotor-side down.
  5. You need the rotors to be deployed only when needed - else it's non aesthetic..
  6. You need a charging station that the drone can go to - autonomously would be nice :)

Infographic for Capturing Project Success

Probably exists already, but I've never seen it.. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to refer to past projects in your company (including the commercially successful ones) like this?

The circle is the planned or forecast value.

Google Maps++

Exists already?

If you know you're sending the user to a state park and you're being launched from an email that clearly reeks of "appointment" - so you can guess he's going on a hike, then you should also think about and report the time it'll take to park and then get to the trail head to meet your party.

Come on Larry.. easy one.

Company Genesis Visualization Tool

Wouldn't it be nice to see on a world map spokes showing where the key founders were born and where they studied - you'll see line segments per founder showing their trajectory..

Here's Google. It would also be nice to have a movie showing grown - as new offices are created and attract talent..

Pythoners out there, make it happen please :)

Come on Nanotech! The 3D Printer We Really Need

Wouldn't it be nice to bypass big pharma and make the drug you need on demand - at the doctor's office of course :) This machine ain't going to be cheap :)

Wiki Style MLS

How many of you have the same complaint?

Buyer's agent sends you some listings - you can barely read the listing - you have to dig for every scrap of info. You show up and you're underwhelmed or flat out disappointed because, if you knew about things - like the floorplan, etc, you'd have passed in the first place.

What can we do?

Tensorflow Set to Upend Hardware Verification

I'm sure TF can go through your legacy testbenches and figure out how to verify your new design. Tessolve might have to say goodbye to their new ventures.

nVidia GPU Egg Fryer

Remember SETI running out of compute power and outsourcing computations to citizens' screensavers?

Why not national labs do the same things with nVidia GPUs - you buy a GPU and use it when someone needs some computational work done - the heat generated fries your egg.

Think about it - the Carnot cycle - you generate heat - which then boils water and the steam does the mechanical work - and you have to use a coolant to get back to water so you can repeat. Key point in this new idea is that your coolant is the egg that's been sitting cool in the fridge.

High Tech University

Here's my concept for a new university. GOOG should put in $1b to fund this.

Offer reverse engineering services - which require all kinds of fancy equipment. The idea - kids working on reverse engineering the latest stuff are now ready to extend the state of the art. How can you beat this?

Cops as School Teachers

Cops on the nasty school may be able to curb some issues.. But, do kids really get the benefits?

How about having cops who have a passion for teaching, and can use their enforcement skills when called upon to do so?

If you see a cop trying to teach you math because he truly knows how much in your interest it is to master the basic skills, you might actually pay attention. You think?

The Version of Alexa that Goldman Sachs Wants AMZN to Make

I just assume the folks at GS are busier than the rest of us mere mortals. So, if I could use this one, I'm sure they'd love it as well..

Your presence is required in a meeting you can join via Skype. Okay. Now, you, like the successful millionaires at GS want to multitask. So, here's the wish list :

You want to be able to mute the sound.
You want to be able to mute your microphone.
When your name is mentioned, you want the preceding speech transcribed and showing up on the screen - of the PC and your phone. You might step away from the desk, so you want to be able to get the alert on both devices.
Your name might be mentioned as "That's what I was told by Robert" OR "Isn't that the case Robert?" OR "Robert? Did you hear from XYZ?" You get the idea. You don't really want to be in this meeting, but, when you need to be, you need to be clued in - the question needs to be available visually so you can quickly get in the game.
So, there's got to be bluetooth connectivity so YOU don't have to listen but your gadget needs to.
There's got to be an alert mechanism.
Using machine learning or other AI, it should be able to predict, even before the question arises that the 2 principal interlocutors will soon be calling on a third party.
Nice? Go for it Goldman Jocks!

Drone Armies to End Flight Crashes

Is it possible to use groups of drones stationed strategically along flight routes to ensure that, when needed, they can take to the air and ensure that an aircraft in trouble will have a soft-landing?

Large Scale Noise Canceler - A Product We Needed Yesterday

Can you set up a sound system that'll ensure you don't need to don earplugs or mini-speakers in your ears and still not have to hear the sound of your neighbour's air-conditioner?

Why not get our great minds working on this one?
